First step, the finish? 
Certainly, the surface of an FRP product is the most visible and in many ways the most important element. It is the first line of defense against corrosion. Each Chem-Pruf® product has a pigmented, corrosion-resistant finish called gelcoat applied as the initial step of fab- 
rication. This means the finish and color is actually molded into every product. Even special colors, designs and patterns can be produced. The end result is a tough, low-maintenance, corrosion- and atmospheric-resistant surface that never needs painting.
